The Marangu Route popularly known as the “Coca-Cola Route”—is Mount Kilimanjaro’s most iconic and comfortable trekking trail. Spanning 6 days and 5 nights, this route is unique as the only path offering shelter in cozy, dormitory-style A-frame mountain huts (Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo) equipped with solar power and comfortable bunks instead of tented campsites.
Trek through five distinct climate zones, starting in lush tropical rainforests teeming with wildlife, ascending through moorland and alpine deserts, and culminating at the icy, glacier-capped summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341ft). Including a dedicated acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, this itinerary is optimized to maximize your body’s high-altitude adaptation and significantly improve your summit success rate.

Gradual High-Altitude Trekking: A steady, well-graded trail suitable for fit hikers, featuring an essential acclimatization day to assist with thin air conditioning.

After breakfast and a briefing, transfer from your hotel to Marangu Gate (1,860m) for registration and permit clearance. Begin your trek through the thick, pristine rainforest, home to blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and exotic birds. Reach Mandara Hut (2,720m) by mid-afternoon. After settling into your cabin, take an optional walk to Maundi Crater for scenic views.
Trek: ~8 km / 5 mi | 4–5 hours | Rainforest zone
Leave the rainforest behind as the trail opens into high-altitude heather and moorland. Pass giant lobelias and groundsel plants while enjoying clear views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Trek steadily up to Horombo Hut (3,720m), a bustling mountain settlement situated in a picturesque valley.
Trek: ~12 km / 7.5 mi | 6–8 hours | Moorland zone
An essential acclimatization day designed to increase summit success rates. Hike high up toward Mawenzi Peak, stopping at the unusual volcanic Zebra Rocks (4,020m). After soaking in the views and letting your body adapt to higher elevations, return to Horombo Hut for lunch and a restful afternoon.
Trek: ~5 km / 3 mi | 3–4 hours | Alpine desert/Moorland zone
Ascend into the high-altitude Alpine Desert, trekking across the “Saddle”—the barren, wind-swept moonscape between Kibo and Mawenzi. Pace yourself strictly pole pole (slowly) to conserve energy. Reach Kibo Hut (4,720m) by early afternoon. Prepare your summit gear, enjoy an early dinner, and get to sleep early before the midnight summit push.
Trek: ~10 km / 6.2 mi | 6–8 hours | Alpine desert zone
Wake up around 11:00 PM for hot tea and biscuits before beginning the steepest part of the climb under headlamp light. Ascend scree switchbacks to Gilman’s Point (5,675m) on the crater rim just in time for a breathtaking sunrise. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the Roof of Africa! Celebrate your accomplishment, take photos, and begin the descent back to Kibo Hut for a quick rest and warm meal, before continuing down to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for overnight rest.
Trek: ~16 km / 10 mi | 10–14 hours | Arctic to Moorland zone
Enjoy a final mountain breakfast before making the long, scenic descent through the moorland and lush rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,860m). Receive your official summit certificates and celebrate with your guide and porter team. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for a warm shower and post-climb celebration.
Trek: ~20 km / 12.5 mi | 5–7 hours | Rainforest zone
