Your Kilimanjaro trekking adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a scenic drive to Machame Gate (1,800 m). After park registration and meeting your mountain crew (guides, chefs, and porters), you enter the lush, emerald canopy of the Mount Kilimanjaro rainforest.
Keep an eye out for black-and-white Colobus monkeys and vibrant tropical birdlife along the winding trail. The path can be muddy and slick, so trekking poles and sturdy boots are essential. Arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon, where your tents will be set up and a warm welcome dinner awaits.
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail steepens as you emerge into the sub-alpine moorland zone dominated by giant lobelias and heather plants. You will climb a rocky ridge onto the expansive Shira Plateau, offering breathtaking panoramic vistas of the snow-capped Kibo Peak and the distant Mount Meru silhouette.
After a steady uphill trek, reach Shira 2 Camp by early afternoon. The high plateau exposure makes sunset here unforgettable, as cold alpine winds set in. Rest and recharge for the acclimatization day ahead.
This is a vital acclimatization day for your trek. Leaving the Shira Plateau, you hike eastward up a barren, moon-like alpine landscape toward the imposing volcanic monolith known as Lava Tower (4,630 m). Hot lunch will be served near the tower to allow your body time to adapt to the thin air.
Following lunch, you descend 670 meters into the Great Barranco Valley. This classic “climb high, sleep low” strategy significantly boosts your blood oxygen levels and increases your chances of reaching the summit. Settle into Barranco Camp, nestled beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall and Heim Glacier.
Start the morning by tackling the famous Barranco Wall (often called the “Breakfast Wall”). While it looks daunting from below, no technical climbing skills are required just a fun scramble using hands and feet under the careful guidance of your mountain guides.
At the top of the wall, enjoy panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers before crossing a series of gullies into the Karanga Valley. Arrive at Karanga Camp in time for lunch. This shorter trekking day provides crucial rest before the push to high camp.
Leave Karanga Camp and ascend a steep, rocky trail through the dry, wind-swept alpine desert to join the Mweka trail. You will arrive at Barafu Camp (the Base Camp for the summit push) by early afternoon.
Once at camp, you will have early dinner, perform final gear checks (thermal layers, headlamps, warm gloves, and insulated water bottles), and go to bed early around 7:00 PM to prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Summit Day: Wake up around 11:30 PM for hot tea and light snacks. Begin the steep, slow-paced climb (pole pole) up the scree slopes toward Stella Point (5,756 m) on the crater rim. Arrive at Stella Point around sunrise to experience magnificent morning views over the surrounding glaciers.
From Stella Point, continue for another hour along the snow-covered rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft) the Highest Point in Africa and the Roof of the Continent! Celebrate your achievements, take iconic photos, and take in the view.
After absorbing the moment, descend back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest and warm lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100 m) for your final night on the mountain.
After breakfast, enjoy the traditional tipping ceremony and celebratory song performed by your mountain crew. Complete your final descent through the lush, warm rainforest to Mweka Gate.
At the gate, successful trekkers are awarded official Kilimanjaro National Park Summit Certificates (green for Stella Point, gold for Uhuru Peak). Meet your transfer vehicle and drive back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a long-awaited hot shower and celebration.
