Your expedition begins with a hotel pick-up and drive to Umbwe Gate (1,800 m). After completing park registration, begin your trek along a narrow, winding ridge between the Umbwe and Lonzo Rivers.
Unlike other routes, Umbwe ascends steeply right from the start through dense, moss-covered rainforest. The trail can be muddy and slick, requiring steady footing and trekking poles. Reach Umbwe Cave Camp in the late afternoon for dinner and rest surrounded by giant trees and forest mist.
Leave the rainforest behind as the terrain transforms into rocky moorland ridges and sub-alpine bush. Today’s trek continues directly up steep, exposed ridges with dramatic drop-offs, offering stunning views of Kibo Peak looming ahead.
As you near the Great Barranco Valley, the trail levels out slightly before dropping into Barranco Camp ($3,900text{ m}$), where the Umbwe trail joins the Machame and Lemosho routes beneath the towering Barranco Wall.
Begin the morning with an exciting climb up the famous Barranco Wall. Although it looks steep, no technical gear is needed—just a hands-on scramble led by your expert mountain guides.
After conquering the wall, trek across barren alpine desert gullies into the Karanga Valley. Arrive at Karanga Camp in time for lunch and a restful afternoon to help your body acclimatize before the high camp push.
A short but steady incline across a dry, wind-swept alpine desert landscape brings you to Barafu Camp (4,635 m). You are now at Base Camp, positioned on an exposed ridge with viewable peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo.
Upon arrival, your crew will pitch tents, serve an early hot dinner, and assist with gear preparation for the midnight summit push. Sleep early by 7:00 PM.
Summit Night: Wake up at 11:30 PM for warm tea and biscuits. Begin the night push up steep volcanic scree toward Stella Point (5,756 m) on the crater rim under a starry sky.
Reach Stella Point at sunrise, then continue along the snow-draped crater rim for another hour to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft) the Roof of Africa! Celebrate, take iconic photos at the summit sign, and absorb the breathtaking glacier views. Afterwards, descend back to Barafu Camp for lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.
Enjoy a hearty breakfast and celebrate with your mountain crew during the traditional tipping ceremony and farewell songs.
Descend through lush rainforest trails to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your official Kilimanjaro Summit Certificates (Gold for Uhuru Peak, Green for Stella Point). Meet your transport vehicle for the transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a celebratory shower and rest.
